eBay VINTAGE VIETNAM US ARMY FIGHTING KNIFE BAYONET M5-1 MAKER J & S CORarer Than the WWII Winchester 97 Bayonet Lug & Heat Shield Type!I The Vietnam War- Episode 15: U.S. Military Combat Shotguns This vintage US Military contract trench gun shotgun heat shield and bayonet mount. This is a rare Vietnam era trench gun heat shield / bayonet adapter. These were made in the late 1960’s/early 1970’sfor a US Government contract for a trench prototype of the Stevens M77E Riot Shotgun. They were made by STEVENS (of Savage/Stevens fame) specifically for the Stevens 77 12-Gauge shotgun. The Stevens is well known, and in the military this weapon was known as ” NSN 1005-00, SHOTGUN, 12 GAGE, RIOT TYPE: STEVENS, M77E.” These shot guns were made originally WITHOUT the heat shield / bayonet lug / bayonet mount assembly . Stevens came up with the bayonet attachment in the middle of the war in Viet-Nam. These were made new to fulfill a U.S. Government contract To arm our allies in the war against communism in Viet Nam. Instead of accepting the US M1917 Enfield / Eddystone bayonet, they would take the more modern M5 Bayonet / M5A1 Bayonet (Korean War era – to – Vietnam era, the shorter M1 Garand bayonet). You are used to the WW1 and WW2 heat shields having the big metal lug on the front for the M1917 Bayonet Used on standard Remington, Winchester, and older Stevens Trench Shotguns. This is a real, vintage, US manufactured military trench gun handguard, but made for the short M5 or M5A1 Garand bayonet! This was made for modern 19 60’s / 1970’s Vietnam War usage with the STEVENS 12 GAUGE M77E RIOT GUN. The Stevens 77E was issued as a “Riot Gun” in some quantity, but with no heat shield or bayonet adapter. When the contract for these was filled, very few (if any) of the complete 77E Trench Guns were sent to arm our allies in the ARVN. It is known that some of these heat shields for the conversion HAD been sent to Vietnam. Many of these were mounted on shotguns, Stevens and otherwise, in Vietnam. The ones stateside then REMAINED stateside. If you read the forums, You will see that several US Army armorers mention mounting these bayo adapters on the Stevens 77E, But also on the Remington 870 and the Winchester 1200 shotguns. The NRA Magazine, “American Rifleman” had an article on the Stevens M77E .12 gauge shotgun. They stated that the military was able to procure some prototype M77E trench guns, With these heat shields / bayonet adapters. They said that they did not think the complete guns ever made it overseas. These heat shields DID, and shotguns had these mounted on them by US armorers, or US and ARVN troops, in Viet-Nam!For a small arms repairman or an armorer, this is easier than having to mill 3 exact screwslots in a barrel. This simplification made these heat shields / bayonet mounts able to be retrofitted on the Stevens shotguns, AND other shotguns as well. This has a front brass bead sight. You can see that the big round front M1917 lug is not there, it was designed without it. You see that it has been milled/drilled to accept the small guard lug on the US M5 / M5-A1 bayonet. You can also see that the rear bayonet lug is shorter, it was made to fit with the smaller M5 “T” shaped bayonet lug. While these were destined for use by ARVN on Stevens 77E shotguns in Vietnam, Many never got there. The heat shields that did not make it overseas became surplus. They never made it to surplus stores. They were issued to Police Departments or sold on the commercial police supply market. Overall length 18 inches Bore dia. 7/8 of an inch or approx .850 in.
